The Sabbath was given to the Jews

“It is written, man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God” . ~Matthew 4:4

“The Sabbath was given to the Jews”

Many today object to keeping the seventh day of the week as the Sabbath, because they have been told that this day of worship was given to the Jews.  If we assume that is true, which it is not,  let’s look at some of the other things that were “given to the Jews.”

1.  Jesus, the Savior of the world was born to a Jewish woman, Mary, she was not a non-Jew.

“The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.” Matthew 1:1Matthew 1:1

The Gospel According to Matthew 1 1 The book of the generation of Jesus Christ Christ and Messiah both mean “Anointed One”, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

2.  The Communion Service was given to twelve Jewish men.

“And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him.  [15] And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.  [16] For I tell you I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”  Luke 22:14-16Luke 22:14-16

14 When the hour had come, he sat down with the twelve apostles. 15 He said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer, 16 for I tell you, I will no longer by any means eat of it until it is fulfilled in the Kingdom of God.”

3.  The New Testament, for the most part, was written to and by Jews.  The exception is Luke who was a Greek.  He only wrote the book that bears his name as well as Acts.  In fact, the majority of the Bible was given through Jewish men, starting with Moses and ending with John.

4.  Salvation itself, according to Jesus “Came through the Jews.”

“You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.”  John 4:22John 4:22
English: World English Bible - WEB

22 You worship that which you don’t know. We worship that which we know; for salvation is from the Jews.

5.  Baptism was a Jewish custom and is even today the method of entering the Family of God, the Christian church.

“Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.”  Matthew 3:13Matthew 3:13
English: World English Bible - WEB

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.

6.  The Christian Church and religion was first and foremost given to Jews.

7.  The example that Jesus, a Jew, gave to us, is still the standard for all Christians to follow. John recorded it in his gospel.

“I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.”   John 5:30John 5:30
English: World English Bible - WEB

30 I can of myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is righteous; because I don’t seek my own will, but the will of my Father who sent me.

Since all of these things that were given to the Jews are observed by Christians today, then why not the seventh-day Sabbath? Since all of Christianity was given to and through the Jews, on just what basis is it legitimate to exclude the day of worship that was given to the whole human race?

“Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. [2] And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. [3] So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.”  Genesis 2:1-3Genesis 2:1-3
English: World English Bible - WEB

2 1 The heavens and the earth were finished, and all their guardians. 2 On the seventh day God finished his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. 3 God blessed the seventh day, and made it holy, because he rested in it from all his work which he had created and made.

Nowhere, in the centuries that have followed do we find that God has blessed any other day for a day of weekly rest and worship.  It is recorded in the Bible that:

“For he has somewhere spoken of the seventh day in this way: “And God rested on the seventh day from all his works.”  [5] And again in this passage he said,

“They shall not enter my rest.”

[6] Since therefore it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience,  [7] again he appoints a certain day, “Today,” saying through David so long afterward, in the words already quoted,

“Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” Hebrews 4:4-7Hebrews 4:4-7
English: World English Bible - WEB

4 For he has said this somewhere about the seventh day, “God rested on the seventh day from all his works;” 5 and in this place again, “They will not enter into my rest.” 6 Seeing therefore it remains that some should enter therein, and they to whom the good news was before preached failed to enter in because of disobedience, 7 he again defines a certain day, today, saying through David so long a time afterward , “Today if you will hear his voice, Don’t harden your hearts.”

Also, we are told that the Sabbath will be observed in heaven after the end of sin.

“From new moon to new moon, and from Sabbath to Sabbath, all flesh shall come to worship before me, declares the Lord.” Isaiah 66:23Isaiah 66:23
English: World English Bible - WEB

23 It shall happen, that from one new moon to another, and from one Sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, says Yahweh.

  • Since the weekly Sabbath was established at Creation.
  • Since it was the only day that Jesus kept when He walked on earth.
  • Since it is the day that God says we will keep in heaven.

Then would it not be reasonable to keep it today too?
